Betta ˈbɛtə’ is a large species of small, brightly colored, freshwater fish, known as bettas, in the gourami family (Osphronemidae).Betta varieties best known by B. Splendens, better known as anti-Siamese fish.
Features
All species of Betta are small fish, but vary in size, ranging from less than 2.5 cm (1 in) in length to Bs. chanoides up to 14 cm (5.5 in) in Akar betta (B. akarensis).
Bettas are anabantoids, meaning they can breathe air through a unique organ called the labyrinth. This results in their ability to thrive in low-oxygen water conditions that can kill many other fish, such as rice paddies, slow-moving streams, canals, and large ponds.
Bettas exhibit two types of reproductive behaviors: some form bubble nests, such as B. splendens, and some are mouthbrooders, such as B. Picta. Oral-producing species are sometimes called "fake bettas", and are sometimes thought to have originated from nest builders by adapting to their fast-moving broadcasters.
A phylogenetic study published in 2004 effectively concluded that bubble infiltration was an ancestral condition in Betta, and that oral contraceptives had occurred more than once in tribal history. However, it has failed to establish a combination of any of the three biodiversity studied: whether a species was found in the lowlands or in the highlands, whether it was found in wetlands, and whether it was found in fast-flowing or slow-moving waters. Burning mouth types often show a slight sexual dysfunction, probably because they do not need to protect the area as do bubble-nesters.
Name
Anti-Siamese (B. splendens) fish are commonly sold in the United States as "bettas". In fact, as of 2017, about 73 varieties are classified within Betta. The difference is that while the common name Betta is written and inserted, when used as a general term it is usually not talicized or tagged. B. pugnax, for example, is why Penang betta.

The word Betta or betta is pronounceˈbɛtə The first part is similar to the English word betting. The name is usually pronounced beɪtə in American English, and can be spelled with a single word. The species name is derived from the Malay word kan betah "persistent fish".
The traditional name "plakat", commonly used in the abbreviated forms, is derived from pla kad meaning "to fight fish", a Thai name for all B members. splendens species complex (All have a wild tendency and are all designed for a violent line in eastern Thailand). The Thai saying does not end there. The term “fish-fighting” is commonly used in all B members. They glorify a variety of species, including the Siamese warrior fish.
Food
Wild Betta fish are hardy and eat almost any animal small enough to be eaten by small fish, including larvae, mosquito larvae or other insects, and small fish. Their natural environment is often limited by resources, so many types of Betta are standard providers.
