History
The goats were released from the Australian coastal islands by Dutch and Portuguese sailors long before the British occupation of Australia. The goats presented came from a variety of backgrounds and were easily adapted to the Australian environment. Many of Australia's first pre-1830 paintings depict animals in the back hills like goats. Some initial efforts were made to develop the goat fur industry in Australia. William Riley, in 1832 introduced the "Angora-Cachemire" animals to his area, Raby, New South Wales. It took another 150 years for the Australian shepherds to develop some of his ideas. An ad also appeared in 1832 in the Western Australian edition of "Colonial Paper" for five million young Cashmere teenagers who bought three kilograms each by W. Tanner of Caversham. That same year, he submitted a paper to the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of New South Wales in an effort to promote the development of the Cashmere / Angora wool industry in Australia.
The golden chase may have brought an end to the baby goat industry. Before the gold rush, herds of cattle, goats, and sheep were controlled by shepherds. Many abandoned their debts and sought to enrich themselves with gold mines. Landlords then had to make some effort to fence off their runs. A home fence could be constructed to control the sheep, which, when traveling extensively, were confined to open fields. The goats were not fenced in and were actively seeking a strong land as their place of exploration, thus forming large herds of wild goats (or trees) that were well established in much of Australia. Eventually, the spread of the villages forced the herdsmen to return to the waterless regions, and the small country.
Other introductions took place in Australia in the 1800's. Wilson (1873) records that Dr. Chalmers imported 49 Cashmere goats to Melbourne in 1863 from the Chinese Chinese Tartery. During this time, Wilson was running his own herd of Cashmere goats in Longerenong in West Victoria. These were descendants of one man and two women imported from India.
herds of goats roaming the streets of Sydney became so furious that the police had to flee. The goat race in which goats were driven by young people in gig lights became very popular at the end of the century, especially in Queensland. The famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba, was so taken with the show in Rockhampton, Queensland, that she even organized a Melba Derby.Over the years, history records many references to goats in Australia. In 1879,

Cashmere was also successfully discovered in Australian goats in 1972 when two researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Dr. Ian Smith and Mr. Wal Clarke, found cashmere in some of the wild goats that were being considered for the Australian Mohair Company's site in Brewarrina. For several years, CSIRO kept a small herd of selected animals in their Prospect laboratory until budget constraints forced them to be distributed. One of the first important histological works was performed during this period.
In the late 1970's, many breeders played with the idea of developing and raising the Australian goat Cashmere. Many of these initial breeds were hampered by a lack of knowledge of the problems involved and a lack of fiber market.
Interest and morality were given greater impetus when in August 1980 Dawson International Limited PLC, Scotland, then the world's largest cashmere investigators, bought a plot of land in Adelong, N.S.W., with the aim of establishing a farm showcase to promote Australian cashmere production. The chairman of Dawson International Limited, Sir Alan Smith, has seen the cash flow situation in cashmere tighten. Although cashmere represented only a small percentage of the company's fiber volume, it had a 50% profit and had a significant impact on the company's profits.
